How do you determine that you are going to buy something you want? Maybe it is a shirt or a new movie or an educational course. Are you an impulse buyer? Are you at the checkout lane, you pick up a candy bar and don’t think twice about it? So many people are living paycheck to paycheck and have to think seriously about what they are buying each day at the store. Income tax refund season is coming soon. Many people like to buy things then that they can’t any other time of the year because they will have extra money.
What questions should you ask yourself when thinking about buying something?
** Is what you want a need or a want? Basically, can you live without it for a whole day?
** Are you buying this product for a purpose like a special event? (dress or shoes)
** If it is a big item, wait 24 hours then if you really want it and have the money then maybe you should buy it.
** Is there events or situations coming up in the future that you may need extra money for such as a tax payment or a special dance for your child (they will need a special outfit).
** Are you on a diet? Do you really need a candy bar or lunch from a fast food place?
** Do you really need to buy a coffee each morning before work? Think about how it adds up each day. How much would you spend all year if you bought a coffee each day?
These may be tough questions to ask yourself when you may want a new book to read or a new outfit. But when living a frugal life every purchase needs to be well thought out. Next time take a second, think and ask yourself a few of these questions when you all of a sudden want an item at the store.
