Reasons to make Birthday Cakes
Have you ever thought about making and decorating your kids or family’s birthday cakes? Think about how frugal that would be. Imagine the conversation you could have with your friends and how much you saved. You may even be able to make some money on the side to make cakes for other people. If you are able to make a cake at home, you would not have to get out of the house to drive to pick up a cake.
There are so many ways to decorate a cake between the kind of icing and the decorations. Did you know there is classes you can take that can teach how to decorate a cake?
I have decorated many children’s birthday cakes. Most years I do them for my child, not to mention friends and their children. I have my own secret recipe for the cake and use a standard buttercream icing. I use buttercream because it is simple to make, tastes delicious, and you can make just about every decoration possible with them. Also, I have worked with royal icing, but it is a little harder to work with as the texture is much denser than a standard buttercream icing. For a beginner, this may be a little hard, but with determination, you can do it. One thing that is great about royal icing, is that you can freeze the designs such as hearts or dots for easy application on the cake that already has a layer of icing on it.
Cost differences of homemade birthday cakes vs. store bought
Where I am a standard 1/4 sheet cake can range from $25.00 to $50.00. To me, this is a crazy price. I can easily bake and decorate my own cake for less than $20.00. This includes if I need to purchase new icing tips, bags, or a new cake pan. Maybe a little more, if I am purchasing a character cake pan, but I always try and do cake pans that I can get multiple uses out of. This leads to a massive savings. Honestly the more cakes you make, the cheaper it becomes down the road. I have enough tips, bags and cake pans now, that I can honestly do just about every shape and design around for any occasion, not only birthday cakes.
Do you decorate and make your own birthday cakes? What does it normally cost you? Lastly, Do you have a tips or tricks for decorating your own cakes?
