Teaching your children about helping others is great life aspect to teach them as they grow. Does your family give to any charities during the holidays or throughout the year? Sometimes at Christmas time it is hard to children to think about other people besides themselves at Christmas time. Children just keep pointing out what toys they want. It is I want, I want. There may children in your child’s classroom that may not have the ability to get the toys they want or have a pair of gloves on the playground.
** Go through your children’s toys while they are at school. If they have not played with it recently, they will not miss it. Give these toys to a charity where people do not have to pay for it.
** Find a charity that may have an angel tree or has families where you can adopt for Christmas. This means that you will buy each person something they may need for Christmas. Sometimes schools have access to this information.
** Donate some food to a food pantry in your area.
** Find a group that donates food specifically to the homeless. Donate food and other useful items that a homeless person may need. Remember these items are different than you would donate to a food pantry.
Tips to Remember when donating for specifically people that are homeless
** Protein filled food because you never know when they will eat again.
** Homeless need items that do not need to be cooked.
** The homeless need items that do not other ingredients added to them to be able to eat it.
** If you have something in the cabinet for over a year, it is not appealing to you then it may not be appealing to others.
** Give items that are high calorie items, that stick to your ribs.
** Do not give cans that need a can opener, cans with pop top openers are great.
** Most canned goods are already cooked and can be eaten straight out of the can.
** Personal hygiene products are great to donate as well as chap stick for lips.
Can you think of anyway you can help those less fortunate in your area? Any little bit helps. Explain to your children what you may be doing and teach them about helping in the community.
