School and Parents
So school has officially started for most families now. Do you talk to your child’s teachers during the year? Are you involved in school activities and meetings? What is the communication like between you as a parent and your child’s school staff? There are many different lifestyles a parent may lead with their child’s education and school.
** All or nothing parent — These could be the parent who is totally involved with every moment of their child’s education including sports involvement. Or their could be the parent that you never see at any school activities.
** Special needs parent– This type of parent you may see at IEP meetings and/or parent teacher conferences. They may contact the teacher or expect communications from the teacher if assignments are not done.
My son has an IEP for school because of needing speech therapy and for additional math help. Some of the help he has needed through the years I have had to fight for. I believe a parent has to fight for and support their child in whatever needs they have. Sometimes a special needs parent may show themselves to much at the school where the staff do not look forward to see you. There could be too much and just enough. A school needs to know that parent is involved and will be there when there is a problem. My kid is an overall good kid. I have subscribed to the school’s grade emails. So each morning I receive a email with his grades to each class. I get an email when something is not complete. I keep up on it with my son. So I may be looked down upon when I don’t show up for parent teacher conferences but I know what is going on with my child already. I don’t need to hear it again.
There are rules at my son’s school that I don’t always agree with. I have lost my temper easily with people on the phone. My advice is don’t start the year bad for your child because they might the backlash for it. It is a parent’s choice who they will believe or not regarding their child, their own child or the school. A parent is known to know their own child. A parent does not want to be told that their child is pulling their leg.
What kind of parent are you? Are you involved in your child’s education? Be involved and make sure the school knows you are.
